Just 120 km from Antalya in the small town of Demre there are two main attractions, symbols of tourist Antalya - the Church of St. Nicholas (XI century) and the Lycian rock tombs in Myra (V century BC). It’s hard to believe, but it is in the Antalya region Nicholas the Saint was born, lived and served as Archbishop. It was here that many legends about St. Nicholas the Saint as a protector of children and sailors and the tradition of giving gifts on Christmas night were born. The Church of St. Nicholas, in which the bishop himself served, was built in the 4th century in the form of a small chapel. In different periods (from the 6th century to the 19th century), the church was rebuilt 4 (four) times - frescoes, floor mosaics, a courtyard, a monastery, a dome and a bell tower appeared. It is believed that Nicholas the Saint was buried in this church and remained there until 1087, until Italian merchants took the relics of the saint to Bari (Italy). The Lycian tombs in Myra are the largest complex of rock burials of ancient Lycia in Antalya, dating from the period Greco-Persian Wars. Externally, the tombs look like houses with triangular roofs, log ceilings and sliding doors. Also on the excursion we will walk through the Greco-Roman theater and examine a small Christian chapel of the 6th century, discovered in 2012 in Demre in the courtyard of a local resident. Stories and legends about You will learn about these places directly on the excursion, and you will also be able to personally touch the sarcophagus in which, according to one of the legends, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was buried.
